Today, it’s time to look at one of the most beloved Sativa-classified strains, Jamaican Dream.

History of Cannabis: Jamaican Dream

There are thousands of cannabis strains in the world, although there are some strains that have managed to conquer the heart of many cannabis consumers around the world. Jamaican Dream is a strain that belongs to Sativa strains (due to its stimulating and creative effects) that’s highly appreciated among consumers and growers.

Jamaican Dream Characteristics

This strain was created by the seed bank Eva Seeds and it’s renowned for its sweet aroma and hits of nuts, and also thanks to its short flowering period; it’s one of the fastest in the world.

The combination of cannabinoids such as THC (which is found in a proportion of approx. 20%), alongside terpene profiles (proportion of each aromatic molecule) present in its buds make this strain produce active, fun and euphoric effects in consumers.

Additionally, this strain is known for its thick pistils which turn orange when mature. In areas where the climate is cold, it can even go deeper purple colours.

Winner of many cannabis cups around the world, this strain is without a doubt one of the most representative of the brand.

In addition, there’s a CBD-rich version of this legendary strain, which comes from a cross between Jamaican Dream and Only CBD. It has also given way to other hybrids such as Black Dream, a cross between Jamaican Dream and Black Domina.

But do you know how their team got this strain? It seems as if destiny wanted them to find the way.

What’s the History Behind Jamaican Dream?

In the summer of 2007, some of the Eva Seeds team visited the incredible island of Jamaica. Due to the large cannabis growing culture in the country, they spent much of their trip visiting different plantations and trying different strans.

They had the pleasure of enjoying some landrace strains in the country, and although some of them were extremely high in quality, they didn’t quite move them.

Towards the end of the trip, they stopped to eat and freshen up in a beautiful place managed by a lovely Jamaican man. The surprise came when, after paying the check, they got their change back in cannabis flowers instead of coins. This is how they got these sweet buds with hints of hazelnut that were delicious. Alongside the buds, there were some seeds that, in the end, they decided to take; this strain had managed to astonish everyone that was there.

Some time later, the team of breeders at Eva Seeds tried this strain and, to their surprise, they saw that the females all had the same structure, aromas and flowering times without any hermaphroditism issues and with large yields. They decided to get rid of the long-flowering ones and hybridize the chosen strains with male Jamaican strains in order to achieve more stability.

According to the team, the seeds created had to have been grown in a certain way by a local producer, as they had the perfect characteristics for outdoor growing; early flowering, resistance to infestations such as oidium and insects, as well as resistance to bad weather, vigorous and easy to grow.

The most surprising aspect, as well as stability, was its flowering time (42 – 45 days, mostly), so they tested this strain more in different flowering stages before reaching the conclusions that, as they thought, this plant has one of the fastest flowering times of any known Sativa.
