Hi again cannabis lover, today in Cali Terpenes we’ll explain what THC is. Surely you have ever heard about this active and psychoactive cannabis component.

¿What is THC? Introduction to Tetrahidrocannabinol

Tetrahidrocannabidiol or THC is one of the main cannabinoids presents in the cannabis plants.

This molecule was isolated for the first time by Habib Edery, Yachiel Gaoni and Raphael Mechoulam during 1964 in Israel.

The THC percentages that Cannabis plants can contain are different, depending on the variety and the type of crop. They can range from very low percentages (close to 0%) until riching high levels of THC, around 25%.

THC is a psychoactive component of the plant, that means it change perception and the mood.

It activates the endocannabinoid receptors present in our body as CBD, precisely in our endocannabinoid system, but CBD does not have psychoactivity.

What is THC used for?

Usualy the most sought psicoactive effects in marijuana are euphoria, sensation of “high” or narcotic sensation, “traveling with the mind”, joy and also the feeling of forgetting worries and stress.

Each plant has its determined effect, according to its cannabinoid profile (percentage of each cannabinoid) and terpenes profile (percentage of each terpene, the molecules that provide aroma and flavor to plants).

There are also non-psychoactive strains, due to their low THC level and high CBD level, such as the Only CBD.

Beneficial and adverse effects of THC:

As we explain before, this cannabinoid usually reduces stress and can provide sense of well-being.

Also suitable for increasing creativity, the consumers around the world certify it.

Many studies about the therapeutic properties of THC have affirmed that among all, its analgesic, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, anti-tumor, anti-ematic and has orexigenic properties (which stimulates appetite).

Researchers explain how THC and Cannabis in general are indicated rather as an aid of symptoms and not as a cure. For this reason, if you suffer from any pathology, contact with your doctor before starting to use cannabinoids or to substitute any medication.

THC have affirmed therapeutic properties among its properties analgesics, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, antitumor, antiematics and orexigenic drugs stand out, but there are consumers who do not feel completely well with THC.

Among all the possible adverse effects of THC we can find: short-term memory impairment, dry mouth, red eyes, coordination disorders or dizziness.

Users who aren’t so used high THC strains may experience paranoia, anguish or anxiety.

In most cases there is no need to be alarmed, in a short time, depending on how THC has been consumed, the effects stops without needing anything more than a sofa break or a sugary drink. Dead for THC overdose is not possible.

It’s also true that THC doesn’t have entirely positive effects in certain people (usually people with psychological disorders or pathologies), for this reason there are many who prefer to consume high CBD varieties instead.

Inexperienced consumers have to avoid or take special precautions with THC ingestion, such as cakes, cookies, gummies, (known as “edibles”), since ingested, THC has really higher effect than smoked, it can last longer up to a few hours and may not be pleasant for anyone is at the first experience.

THC and terpenes:

As we explain in the post “What the entourage effect is“, Cannabis molecules have a more intense effect when they’re used together.

Terpenes modulate the effects of THC, (so, make them more stimulating or relaxing) and can enhance them. The presence of other cannabinoids also modulates the final effect.

However, as many studies indicate, when you consuming cannabinoids such as isolated THC without the presence of other molecules such as terpenes, is not as effective.

If your extractions or cannabis flowers have lost aroma and flavor, you can add our terpenes. Your products will have better and more intense aroma and flavor, and consecuently   the effect is modulated  and the effects of cannabinoids wil be enhaced.
